19 arrested for suspected loansharking activities in islandwide raid
SINGAPORE: Police have arrested 19 people for suspected
involvement in a loansharking syndicate, making this the largest number
of loansharking-related arrests resulting from a single operation this
year.
18 men and a woman, aged between 19 and 40 years old, were taken into
custody following an island-wide operation early Monday morning,
Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and the Police
Intelligence Department raided various locations and seized more than
S$35,000 in cash.
Other items seized included computers, mobile phones, storage media and suspected debtor records.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the
loansharking syndicate was also involved in loanshark-related
harassment in connection with the illegal loans.
First-time offenders found guilty of operating a business as an
unlicensed moneylender may be fined at least S$20,000 and up to
S$200,000, jailed a maximum of two years, or both.
Repeat offenders face mandatory imprisonment of up to five years, including a fine of up to S$200,000.
Persons found guilty of loanshark harassment may be fined at least
S$4,000 and up to S$40,000, or jailed up to three years, or both.
They could also be caned if any damage to property or hurt to persons was caused while committing the acts of harassment.

More than 50 % increase in loanshark arrests
The number of people arrested for loanshark related activities increased by more than 50 percent in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year.
Police described this increase as ' significant ' and said the number of harassment cases related to such activities has also been on the rise.
Nearly 4000 cases of harassment were seen in the first three months, about double that for the same period last year.
At a media conference today, police gave an update on its biggest arrest on loansharks made this year.
Just this morning, police busted a group of 19 Singaporeans - 18 men and one woman - believed to be involved in such activities.
The suspects, aged between 19 and 40 years old, are believed to have some 5000 debtors and responsible for nearly 500 cases of harassment.

First time offenders found guilty of operating a business as an unlicensed moneylender could be fined up to 200 thousand dollars and jailed for 2 years or both.
Repeat offenders could also be fined up to that amount and jailed up to five years.
Those who are found guilty of loanshark harassment could be fined up to 40, 000 dollars and / or jailed up to 3 years.

3 arrested for loansharking activities in Singapore
SINGAPORE: Singapore’s police have made three more arrests of suspects involved in loansharking activities.
In the first case, police arrested a 41—year—old Chinese man on Thursday for suspected involvement in loansharking activities following a tip—off from a member of the public.
Police received the tip—off on Monday from someone who spotted a getaway car relating to a suspected loanshark runner.
Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the suspect’s identity and arrested him. A notebook and a mobile phone were also seized from the suspect.
Two youths were also arrested on Wednesday for suspected involvement in harassment activities.
Police were alerted to the case of loanshark harassment at Clementi Avenue 4.
They spotted two youths running down a flight of stairs and when checked upon, the two were found in possession of three cans of paint, a red marker, a pair of gloves and a Swiss knife.
Investigations revealed they had committed acts of harassment in the Choa Chu Kang, Ang Mo Kio and Queens Close estates.
Both suspects are aged 17.

17-year-old girls arrested for loanshark harassment activities
SINGAPORE: Police have arrested two 17-year-old girls for their suspected involvement in loanshark harassment activities.
The arrest took place when police responded to a case of loanshark harassment at a block at Yishun Street 81 on Friday.
Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division detained the first suspect at
the fourth floor staircase landing. The second suspect was detained at
a nearby car park.
Police said a black marker pen and a piece of paper with suspected debtors' records were also recovered from their possession.
The two suspects will be charged in court on Saturday with the offence of loanshark harassment under the Moneylenders Act 2008.
First-time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment are
liable to a fine of not less than S$4,000 and not more than S$40,000,
or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, or both.

Four Malay youths arrested for suspected loansharking activities
Police have arrested four Malay youths for suspected involvement in a series of loanshark harassment cases islandwide.
They’re aged between 16 and 24 years old.
Police detained a 17 year old female suspect yesterday after they responded to a case of loanshark harassment at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1.
A marker pen, ATM card, lighter were among the loanshark harassment related items found in her possession.
Following the arrest of the female suspect, Police established the identities of her accomplices.
Officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division and Criminal Investigation Department then raided several locations at Marsiling Lane, Whampoa Drive and Jurong West.
A 16-year-old male suspect and two other female suspects aged 20 and 24 years old were subsequently arrested.
The group was believed to be responsible for multiple loanshark harassment islandwide.
Their acts include setting fire to items outside units at Hougang, Woodlands and West Coast.
All four suspects will be charged in Court tomorrow for loanshark harassment under the Moneylenders Act 2008.

Police have arrested two men for loansharking activities.
The two Chinese men were arrested yesterday morning after police received a tip-off.
The first suspect, a 46 year old man, was arrested in the vicinity of Woodlands Estate.
The suspect was found to be in possession of some ATM cards, handphones and a SIM card.
Following the arrest, officers conducted extensive probes and carried out another raid at Pasir Ris Estate where they arrested a 39-year-old male suspect for a similar offence.
Some ATM cards, one handphone and a stack of bank transfer slips were seized from the second suspect upon his arrest.
The two suspects will be charged in Court tomorrow for assisting in the business of an unlicensed moneylender.
First-time offenders found guilty of assisting in the business of an unlicensed moneylender may be fined up to $200,000 or imprisoned up to 2 years or both.
